My favorite cans7/22/2011
I have owned the Grado SR125 and SR200, I now own Beyerdynamic DT880 in 250 ohm, and before all that I was listening to some Sennheiser Pro 600 ohm cans. I bought these AKG K601 cans about the same time as the DT880 cans, back in late 2007. I also ended up with an AKG HEARO 999 Audiospere II setup by late 2007. They are all very good. If I could only have one, it would be the AKG HEARO 999, as they are wireless and the transmitter is also a high quality DAC, can be used as an audiophile quality preamp for music and home theater, has synthesized 2-channel surround sound, and contains a very good hardwired headphone preamp. You can listen while roaming about the house. With a MSRP of $1100 back in the day, it had to be good, and it was aimed at the pro market. But what about the AKG K601 for about $300, and ditto for the Beyerdynamic DT880? Needless to say, these hardwired cans are fully the equal of the wireless 999 cans in sound quality. In fact, I think the bass is better in both the DT880 and K601, and both are a bit more open. HEARO 999 seems to be a hybrid between open and closed design to my ears, and they look it as well. The extra weight can wear on you after a while. The HEARO 999 has that trademark lusciopus midrange that AKG seems to get better than anybody else, and the K601 has even more of that luscious midrange. The DT880 has more extended bass and treble, but seems reticent in the midrange by comparison. For classical orchestral music and widerange electronica, the DT880 seems the best set of cans by a slim margin. However, for vocal music and music rich in midrange like guitar, the K601 has the truth of timbre and emotional presence that grabs you and pulls you into the music. The K601 sits on your head, but it connects to your heart. The DT880 might appeal more to audiophiles that listen to the cans or every minute detail of the music in isolation. If you have heard good tube gear and good solid state gear, K601 is more like tubes and DT880 is more like solid state. I own both types of gear by Conrad-Johnson, and appreciate the differences. AKG headphones also have the lowest fatigue factor of any of the headphones I ever owned, which may explain their popularity among professionsals who wear cans for a living....or somebody who owns C-J amplification and wants that liquidity, truth of timbre and freedom from fatigue without loss of resolution.
