ATH-ANC23 - QuietPoint Active Noise Cancelling In Ear Earphones

ATH-ANC23 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Headphones reduce distracting background noise by up to 90% while offering the superior sound that makes Audio-Technica a world-leading pro audio company.

Engineered to create a comfortable listening environment in areas with high ambient noise, these in-ear headphones feature a miniature microphone in each earpiece that picks up ambient noise (such as traffic, air-handling systems, etc.). Electronics in the control box create a noise-cancelling wave that is 180° out of phase with the ambient noise. This wave acts like a noise eraser: it cancels out the annoying sounds that surround you without diminishing the audio you want to hear. The result...a peaceful enclave to enjoy the music or movies of your choice.

Features

  • Ultra-compact in-ear design is ideal for travel
  • Advanced electronics cancel up to 90% of background noise
  • Innovative ANC circuitry delivers an exceptionally pure audio signal in noise-cancelling mode

Expert In House Review - Dave Solomon

Some of the best under $100 earphones, EVER!

DESIGN & FEATURES

I wasn't sure how the ANC23 would fare in my vast collection of in-ear-monitors. Unlike most of the others which I've had the pleasure of trying/owning, the ANC23 include a very nice Active Noise Canceling feature. I was initially inclined to care less about QuietPoint ANC feature because I find that most canal-phones do a good job at canceling out noise even without an ANC feature. However, I found that because of this feature I was less inclined to push the IEMs as deep in and this lead to a comfier fit without sacrificing sound quality. When the music is turned off and the noise cancelling feature is turned on, you can truly notice the ANC feature at work. However with music playing, the feature was less noticeable to me. I tend to prefer IEMs where the cable wraps over and behind the ear. I just find the fit more comfortable this way and the cable also tends to be less intrusive as well in this configuration. The ANC23 have a cable which does not natively wrap behind the ear but instead is designed to fall straight down. Even though this is not my preference, it did not bother me because I still found the earphones themselves to fit very nicely within my ear. I found it particularly easy to find a good fit with these earphones using the medium-sized tips included in the assortment of silicone rubber ear tips. If I had any real quibble with the overall design it would be that the QuietPoint feature (which has a belt-clip on it for easy travel) is just a bit too close to where the cable terminates to make clipping it to my belt or pocket as comfortable as it should be. I wish perhaps the cable were just one foot longer for this reason, but others may not share this experience since I'm a tall one.

SOUND – THE IMPORTANT STUFF!

I listened to these directly out of an iPod Classic 5G. The sound was truly impressive. The first thing I noticed was that the sound of the ANC23 felt more outside the head than many IEMs. One way in which I test to see how the sound envelops the head is to use a mono recording and take note of the shape and size of the overall sound. I found the ANC23 to present sound in a rounded and in-front-of-you manner. Listening to Duke Ellington's "Take The 'A' Train", I felt as though I was seated before the band rather than having the band play inside my head. At its price-point, the ANC23 is the best sounding earphone I have yet to hear! While I will further scrutinize the sound reproduction, my overall impression of the sound was that in terms of overall transparency and detail. The tonal balance I found to be a touch on the warm side, but the bass showed to be fairly tight. In some orchestral music I found the bass a little under-controlled, however the spatial presentation of these earphones still allowed for plenty of detail to make its way through. I found the midrange to be fairly flat, but it did present some etch up in the upper spectrum of the midrange. The highs feel extended if just slightly rolled off for a nice non-fatiguing experience. I felt I was capable of listening for hours without breaking, using these! I don't like sibilance from my headphone (the harsh sound of the letter S) and I am very pleased with the fact that these earphones are some of the least sibilant which I've tried. Listening to Eminem's "My Name Is" I was impressed to hear the subtle percussion elements in the left channel be perfectly audible. Guitars are rendered well. Listening to "My Michelle" by Guns N' Roses, it was very easy to focus on the left and right guitar tracks independently and differentiate them. Perhaps a little of bit of details in the highs were just slightly lacking here, but the detail presented here is the best I have heard at this price-point.

RECOMMENDED FOR…

I recommend these for any commuter looking to have a quiet ride with their portable player while enjoying a variety of music. I thought these were fantastic with most of the genres I threw at it (rock, pop, rap, reggae, jazz, electronic) For classical I thought these were good but I would recommend a earphone which was slightly flatter.

LAST WORD

The ANC23 is a very affordable and comfortable earphone with an excellent active noise cancellation feature and slightly warm tonal balance, perfect for the commute and long listening sessions. These were perhaps the best earphones I have tried thus far for under $100!

QUIET SMOOTHIES

February 9th, 2011 -- by Tom Martin

Reviewers of audio equipment must, as a matter of necessity, talk about somewhat abstract concepts like “dynamic range.” These terms aren’t often very well defined, but are important nonetheless. Dynamic range, which in principle simply defines the difference between the background noise level of a product and the loudest sound the product can reproduce, is a particularly significant case example. Music, of course, consists of sounds, but these sounds differ not only in pitch and combination and timing, but also in level, or what we commonly call “volume”. The ability of a piece of audio equipment to reveal the sounds at all sorts of different levels is of paramount importance to accurate music reproduction, just as the ability of audio equipment to present correct pitches and tone colors is important. PRODUCT CONCEPT

While relying on a seal to block external sounds is simple, the extra effect of electronic noise cancellation should allow greater noise reduction and could also help tune the noise reduction to particularly difficult frequencies (e.g., the 125 Hz drone of an aircraft engine).

Audio-Technica claims that its QuietPoint technology, as used in the ATH-ANC23, attenuates "up to 90%" of the external noise from the environment. It uses battery-powered circuitry in a small box that is attached in the middle of the headphone’s signal cable to do the noise cancelling. (For those of you permanently on the go, it may be helpful to know that the signal processing circuitry is set up so that the headphones continue to work in passive mode even if the battery runs out of power.) EASE OF USE

The active-plus-passive noise cancelling approach allows part of the value proposition to aim at ease of use.

ANC23s and accessories
First, by relieving the earphones of the need to block out all external sounds through tight-fitting eartips, the ANC23s don’t have to have quite as tight a seal to the ear canal. This should allow the designer to create a more comfortable earphone, at least when compared with those models that create pressure points (a common problem). I’d say that the comfort level of the ANC23 is above average. As I’ve mentioned before, my in-ear comfort reference is the Klipsch Image X10i, and I’d say the ANC23s are about 80% as comfortable. However, the oval shape of the Klipsch earpiece still distributes pressure more evenly, while the Audio-Technicas seem to achieve a stronger seal, at least with my ears. Note that Audio-Technica supplies several sizes and types of ear tips, so your mileage may vary. Read More...

SONIC CHARACTER

I tested the ANC23s using an iPhone 4 loaded with tracks ripped from CD in Apple Lossless format, driving the Audio-Technicas both directly from the iPhone and via a NuForce Icon DAC/amplifier.

The ANC23s are really quite likeable. They sound impressively good, especially given their reasonable price, though their sound isn’t strictly aimed at maximum accuracy. But most people would like a small amount of “tonal tweaking” in their headphones, and I think the ANC23s’ tweaks have broad appeal.

A key point that many will view favorably is that the ANC23s have pretty solid bass. I’d rate them as slightly elevated in the mid-bass, with the note that this elevation in level doesn’t seem excessive or particularly intrusive. In fact, I think many people would view a headphone with less bass as sounding “wrong.” That’s because listeners aren’t necessarily looking for headphones that sound “just like live music,” but rather looking for headphones that, on an intuitive level, sound natural and well balanced. Lots of folks also like slightly elevated bass on headphones to help compensate for the lack of bass “air” (that is, the sense of large bass pressure waves pressing against our chest cavities, and so on), which necessarily gets lost when listening through headphones.

From around 200 Hz to 5kHz the ANC23s roll off very slightly. This is another well-consider choice, I suspect, since some people prefer a “rich” and not at all strident sound in the midrange. People who love instrumental and vocal dynamics, however, might find the ANC23s a little reserved or dull. Read More...

MUSICAL EXAMPLES

On Faun Fables "Hibernation Tales" from Light of a Vaster Dark [Drag City], the bass drum has excellent depth and weight with the ANC23, though it might be missing a slight bit of upper bass definition.
On Eliza Gilkyson's "Borderline" from Paradise Hotel, the vocal is clear but lacks the last bit of air and resonance you'd like to hear to make it seem like she's singing to a real person in a real place.
On Bettye LaVette's rendition or "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" from her Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, the sound is warm and smooth, but maybe slightly too smooth with the result that it sounds a bit dynamically constricted.

BOTTOM LINE

Consider this product if: Subtle bass weight, warmth and smoothness are important, of if you want active noise cancellation features because you will use your headphones in environments where noise might otherwise intrude on your music.
Look further if: Treble brilliance and Midrange refinement are essential for you.

Cuts airline noise reasonably well for the price at a fraction of other devices
Cons:
Audio is not as good as other ear buds I have used.
Other Thoughts:
A good compromise

ATH-ANC231/19/2012

Pros:
Great sound if you get a good fit, better when NR off. Reduces constant low freq noise.
Cons:
Sound gets louder and seems more compressed when NR turned on. More suitable to those with bigger ears.
Other Thoughts:
Std earpieces quite uncomfortable swapped with those from ATH-CKM50’s and more comfortable.

Best earbuds ever!12/8/2011
I am impressed with the sound quality and noise cancelling feature. I wish they came with more of the foam tips because those are the most comfortable and isolate the noise the best. I haven’t taken them on a flight yet but I will do that on Monday so I will give feedback on how well they do.

My Daughter Loves These Buds9/14/2011
I bought a pair of these for my daughter in college. She was having problems with a noisy roommate when she wanted to study in their dorm. These buds were recommended to my by the General Manager, Brian Gluck, at Headphones.com. All I can say is that my daughter has fell in love with these earbuds. She loves them so much that I’ll be buying myself a pair around Christmas. Thanks Brian for the great recommendation & the service at Headphones.com was fantastic, too.

Temper Your Expectations8/13/2011
I ordered these to cut out the noise in my new open work area. I was right to be skeptical about the "up to 90%" noise reduction promise. It probably cuts out about 35% or so. I guess that qualifies for "up to 90%." ;-) Ironically, it cuts out the white noise and leaves the voices. That doesn’t mean they’re worthless, though. While you can’t use them without music and expect to have a quiet work area, it does remove enough of the noise so that you don’t have to crank up the music to painful levels. On a recent flight, a guy with BOSE headphones let me try them to see the difference. Even they don’t cut out all the noise. (We were already on the ground, not a true test of engine noise.) And they’re much clunkier. I’m keeping these earphones ... but it would be nice to know if the company comes out with an improved version. At least they weren’t $500. :-)

noise reduction8/1/2011
Ear plugs are not as comfortable as they could be and allow noise to be heard. However they do a good job of reducing background noise. I used them on both 747 and 777 and they greatly reduced the noise in both cases.
