Grado headphones are known as a consistently flat headphone that will give any user a listening experience of a lifetime. In order to make a Grado headphone shine, the higher end models should be hooked into a proper headphone amplifier, while the SR60i and SR80i can be run off newer smartphones or lossless audio players. Put together one at a time in Brooklyn, the Grado headphone line ranks top in many audiophiles minds as the premier headphone line in the industry.
Customer Reviews | Joe | | Update: 2 1/2 months | 12/16/2011 | | | After living with these beautiful headphones for nearly 3 months I thought I should note my opinions. To address the comfort issue I called up Grado Labs and they told me to bend out the headband a bit. After doing this, I can happily report that any issue i ever had has been totally resolved. In fact, in the box there was a sheet of paper with a little not at the bottom saying that if they fitted tight, one can simply bend out the band to the user’s liking. Needless to say, there is not a single comfort problem anymore. NONE! The sound is still as perfect as I could ever want for $295, but with the addition of the following, I now enjoy much better sound: Wireworld ultraviolet USB cable, HRT music streamer II, Better Cables Silver Serpent interconnects, Bellari HA540 tube amp, and a 1960 Raytheon 12ax7a organ stock tube (long black plates). With all this the headphones can be driven properly with plenty of power and MUCH higher quality audio input. However, at 32 ohms impedance, these can be driven perfectly fine by an ipod or computer, but even with a modest system (like mine), the results are magical. To me, nothing is better after a long day than sitting down and listening to one of the best investments i have ever made. Like before, I give these headphones an solid 5 stars. | | | | Joe | | absolutely wonderful headphones | 10/6/2011 | | | I have been using these for a week now and have about 30 hours of use. For the money the sound cannot be beat. However, i’ll talk about the sound a little later. These are my first pair of expensive headphones. I previously bought a pair of Klipsch Image s4’s and now just use them for travel, school, etc. I know a enough about headphones in general to say that the overall quality of these are fantastic. Besides a few somewhat minor drawbacks, I am 100% pleased with them.
BUILD QUALITY:
Overall they are built wonderfully. The cable is the thickest headphone cable I have ever seen. The cups are very good looking (though they are not as shiny as the picture suggests. The foam is quite soft and the headband is made of what looks like real leather, not the material on the cheaper prestige series. The adjustments are stiff and do not move by themselves. They look very retro and classy, unlike the "space cadet" look of the similarly priced beats studio. I will bluntly say that these are better in EVERY way besides comfort. Either way, you will not be disappointed in the build quality.
COMFORT:
Unfortunately, this is the biggest downfall of these headphones; they are somewhat uncomfortable. My ears touch the hard center of the cup and get quite soar after about an hour. However, after taking them off for 5 minutes relieved the soarness and was fine. DO NOT LET THIS HOLD YOU BACK FROM BUYING THESE. since they are not intended for any sort of travel or even leaving your desk for the most part, I do not find a five minute break at all a problem. The sound makes them worth every cent and more even with slight comfort issues. I am wearing them right now and feel no pain or discomfort.
SOUND:
The absolute best aspect of these headphones is the sound. I love to see that Grado understands that headphones should be made for sound and not for just looks. While these phones look truly beautiful, they have a retro and minimalistic approach to them, which I love. But again, they sound like they cost twice as much. They aren’t heavy on bass but the bass is very, VERY crisp. This is good to my ears because they still have a definite thump to them, but not too much. The mids are extremely detailed. So detailed that I feel like my Klipsch’s are sorely lacking in detail, when in reality they sound fantastic. (I highly recommend them) They also make $400 beats sound like trash.
I just want to take this time to say
that beats are THE WORST waste of
money in the headphone world. They
sound like a third of their price and
are much, much too bass heavy. Truly,
please do not even consider beats. go
for Grado, Sennheiser, Pioneer,
Ultrasone, etc.
But back on topic, The highs are not harsh at all and sound extremely clear and defined as well. They are very pleasant sounding with basically every genre except for heavy metal and rap. Some kind of bass boost would easily solve that problem though. Notably Three Days Grace, Bullet for My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, and Avenged Sevenfold sound magnificent. I cannot emphasize how natural, defined, detailed, and transparent these honestly sound. Every one of my friends have complimented how great they sounded as soon as they put them on. I have not tried them on a headphone amp yet, which will make them sound even better. These will sound incredible even without an amp. Even on a tight budget I am happy with this investment. I can almost guarantee that they will sound as good as headphones twice their price, besides the more expensive Grados obviously.
OVERALL:
I will stand behind this product 100% and would recommend them to anybody with the money that wants to get the absolute best sound for under $500. Though they might be somewhat uncomfortable to some, they are fully worth it regardless of this problem. These headphones will bring out background details that you have never heard before in your other headphones even without an amp. These phones look great and have a very professional look to them. They are made out of the best materials available and are built to last. They will hold up for many years. I give them a 4.7 (because of the comfort), but will gladly round to a 5. | | | | Andrey Suprun | | I am in awe | 4/27/2011 | | | Coming from a very modest listening background, I can honestly say that these things are astounding. I am hearing lyrics that I have never heard before. I can hear Robert Plant counting under his breathe and breathing in before he starts to sing. Cymbals actually sound like cymbals for the first time through headphones. The great thing about these is that if you are unsure of which headphone amplifier or DAC to get for a while, you can wait as much as you like, for these are very low impedance at 32?. Your portable music player or laptop will likely be able to drive them to satisfying volumes.
A couple of sidenotes:
- The actual drivers are enclosed in a metal housing, but the outside of that housing is not matte silver as in the picture, but rather a very brightly polished chrome-like finish
- The cable is long, but also properly thick (~6.5mm in diameter)
- These are OPEN headphones. What you hear, other people will pic up to a degree you or they may find annoying. Personally, I don’t care.
XD
If you buy these, you cannot really be disappointed. Along with being amazing, these are an amazing value. | | | | Click here to write a review ! |
