As I write this review, Beats by Dre brand headphones are currently one of the most established headphone lines on the consumer market. The combination of both attractive looks and packaging, as well as the appeal of world-renowned producer seems to have worked. But one should not forget that sound reproduction is the primary purpose of a headphone and with this in mind, the Beats Studio headphones are still an excellent choice for certain applications. For one, they are as comfortable as I’ve ever felt a headphone be; the noise cancellation is excellent; the sound, while certainly bass-emphasized, is quite enjoyable to these ears. When paired against other headphones at the same price point, there is no doubt that for certain listening preferences, there are better sounding headphones. However, the overall package of the Beats Studio is hard to beat: Super comfy, noise-cancelling, sounds good right out of an iPod, is an easily recognized status symbol.
Feature Presentation
The Beats Studio’s active noise cancellation feature is really excellent at eliminating outside noise. However, I do prefer headphones which are capable of allowing you to hear the music without activating the ANC feature. I prefer this option for two reasons: Battery drainage; and the perceived slight pressure on the ear which all active noise cancelling headphones can sometimes have when the ANC feature is activated. If I was in a quiet room I would prefer not having to use the noise cancelling feature. Unfortunately, the Beats Studio is not one of these headphones. On the flipside however, the Beats Studio’s Noise Cancelling ability is amongst the best I’ve experienced.
The detachable miniplug cable is a feature I like because this cable can be tugged without the worry of breaking: In most cases the cable will simply be pulled out of the socket if tugged with force. Another noteworthy feature of this headphone is the collapsible ear pads which make for easier storage and travel. The ear pads themselves are very plush and fit around my ear snug without exuding too much pressure. Of the entire Beats line I feel these are the most comfortable.
Monster Sound
The Studios have a sound that far exceeded my expectations. Yes they are bassy; Yes they are fun sounding; but they are more detailed than I had expected! Like the other Beats headphones which I’ve tried, there is a noticeable roll-off in the treble response. The sound I found to be slightly sibilant but not aggressively so. I enjoyed the headphones most with contemporary pop and hip hop, but it was also enjoyable with classic rock and jazz. For classical music, I am stubborn about my headphones having tight bass and extended/sparkle in the treble – this headphone was not my preference for classical. It was however one of the best headphones for hip hop which I have ever heard.
Overall
The Beats have my highest recommendation for a hip hop / pop fan looking for a noise cancelling headphone to travel with their portable player. This headphone is feature-filled and so comfortable - and most of all, it sounds just right for the music & listener which it is intended for.
