  • Description

Long-known for making some of the worlds best speakers, Focal has entered the headphone world with a bang. The Focal Utopia is Focal’s shot across the bow to anyone who makes high-end headphones.

With the Utopia, Focal has created an audio masterpiece without sacrificing comfort or appearance - a rare feat in high-end headphones.

Made in France with the finest materials available and designed to perfection, the Utopias look every bit as good as they sound. The attention to detail is astounding. Even the box is made from leather that is much softer than it needs to be.

The sound is thick, clear and satisfying with perfectly accurate highs and soothing lows. Everything is balanced in a way that removes layers between you and the music that you didn’t know were there until you put them on. The soundstage is so large that it’s easy to forget you’re wearing headphones (but the soft lambskin earpads make you happy you are).

To get the most from the Utopias, we suggest pairing them with a great amplifier and DAC (Digital Analog Converter). Right now, our favorite amp to pair with the Utopia is the German-made SPL Phonitor X which really shows what the Utopias are capable of.

    Nothing Short of Amazing

I bought my first pair of "high end" headphones three years ago, after testing numerous headphones in the $1,000-$2,000 price range. The headphone I liked the most, by far, was the $1,200 planar magnetic Oppo OM-1. I have been very pleased with the Oppo headphones, and thought I would live with them for many, many years. But after reading a dozen reviews of the Focal Utopia headphones, all of which, in slightly varying language, described them as "the best headphone on the planet," I was intrigued to find out what I was missing. My bad.

Before ordering a pair of Utopias, I checked with a dealer of both Focal and Cary equipment to determine that the Utopias would play nicely with my Cary SLI-80 tube amplifier. I was assured they would. Still, I wondered if the Utopias would be enough better than my Oppos to justify paying $4,000 for a set of headphones that would be the most expensive component of my stereo system except for my amp itself.

Before telling you what you already suspect, let me say a word about why, after talking with the above-mentioned dealer, whose advice I have relied on many times before for tube upgrades in my Cary amp, I chose to look elsewhere to buy the Focal headphones. Though the dealer assured me I could return the headphones if I didn't think they were worth the price, their return policy was 30 days and a 15% restocking fee. I probably would have lived with the 30 day limit, but the restocking fee meant, in essence, that the cost to demo the Focal Utopias, if I decided to return them, was $600. Then I found headphones.com. If you are reading this review, you already know what an incredible return policy they offer. It seemed almost too good to be true but after talking with both owners, and seeing reviews of the return policy by stereo experts whose component reviews I've followed for years, I made the plunge. Given my experience, I can't imagine why anyone would buy a set of headphones from anyone else.

    Now, what about the Foca...

The best headphones I've ever heard in my life

For a while now, I've read a ton of articles about how the Utopias were the best headphones in the world. I finally took the plunge and purchased the Utopias from Andrew and Taron (thanks for the great customer service, guys!). Well, the cans sounded just as good as I've read. The sound is perfect. Great highs, mids, and satisfying, powerful lows. They are so good.

The problem is, when listening to other headphones, those other headphones now sound disappointing in comparison. I have Sennheiser HD 800s, Shure SE846s and Grado Rs1e headphones in my collection. Compared to the Utopias, they all sound, well.... underwhelming. Now, I'm not saying those other headphones are bad. I love each of the headphones for one reason or another, but they have their downsides. The HD 800s have amazing clarity and sound stage, but the bass is very underwhelming. The se846s are the best IEM's I've ever heard and block out outside noises better than any other IEMs or headphones I have, but they lack the clarity of my other headphones. The Rs1es have the best separation between instruments that I've ever experienced, but they also have poor bass and a lowered clarity.

With the Focal Utopias, I get all of the best sides of those other headphones with none of the downsides. Clarity is amazing, separation is amazing, soundstage is amazing, bass is perfect. I wholeheartedly recommend these headphones. They will change your perception of what headphones can achieve. Unparalleled quality!
