With characteristic Grado dynamics, detail and musical presence, these completely open headphones offer only a slight sonic compromise below the heavily lauded but significantly more expensive SR225e sound performance.
The look of the Grado SR125e may perhaps be old-school retro, but the clean acoustic performance of these made-in-the-USA headphones is modern as can be for listeners seeking a lively 'front row' audiophile headphone without investing a month's pay.
The Grado SR125e model perhaps gets a bit lost in the crowd of Grado headphones. And if you are truly set on an impressive Grado flavor for your headphone collection, we think stretching for the superb SR225e remains a commendable idea.
But if the budget simply won't allow and you still want to get the most high-end Grado listening experience at the lowest possible investment, the SR 125 e will satisfy by delivering a typically very lively, very present Grado tonal signature, slightly forward in the mids/highs with clear musical detail resolution and a tightly punchy low bass response.
It's actually a very engaging tonal character for modern and classic rock genres most especially, along with any well-recorded music style. The overall soundstage perspective is a bit narrow and upfront so classical or symphonic listeners may miss the sense of dimensional orchestral space heard with the top 'PS' or 'GS' Grado models.
The Grado SR-125e earpads/headband can tend to be uncomfortable for some wearers, but this can be remedied by gently [gently!] bending the headband to better fit the top of the head and/or by getting a set of the foam Grado 'Large' bowl-type earpads.
The Grado SR-125 e are hand-built at Grado's Brooklyn facility. It uses proprietary drivers perfectly matched to .1dB with voice coils made of Grado's also-proprietary ultra-high purity, long-crystal, oxygen-free copper wiring.
The SR125e employs the basic Grado flexible headband and simple metal height adjusters that connect the earcups to the headband allowing for up-&-down fit adjustments plus full 360-degree earcup rotation. This feature is ideal for laying the headphones down flat for storage or transit. The earpads are the Grado S-CUSH style. The approximately 7.5ft straight headphone cord attaches to both earpieces and terminates to a mini 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo plug.
