"This...is an awesome all-around headphone...I've met the predecessor 88 Classics, which I found profoundly meh. But this new Meze 99 Classic is a whole 'nother story all together. This is a great headphone...The 99 Classic is not only terrific looking, it's well built to deliver the goods for a long time...Also prominent, but not necessarily obvious at first glance, it the fact that these cans are primarily screwed together and can be completely disassembled. Should anything ever go wrong with your Meze 99 Classics they can be repaired... Imaging is outstanding for a sealed headphone. The image doesn't move as far out from my head as some other open headphones, but width, depth, and image specificity seem very, very good. Dynamics are also quite good, though lacking the serious punch big planar magnetics can deliver with a powerful amplifier. On the other hand, the 99 Classics are very efficient, and an astonishing drive and dynamism can be had from a phone... The Meze 99 Classic is a ridiculously fun listen."

"There is not a hint of crappy plastics on these cans as far as I can see and looking into their design information and this does seem to be confirmed. They are comprised entirely of walnut wood, zinc, ABS, silicone and spring steel and finished with pleather and memory foam. Each component is user replaceable, and when I say each one I mean every single bit of the headphone from the headband to the cups, drivers, sockets, you name it... Despite its woody exterior, the 99 Classic has a very natural sounding tonality avoiding anything overtly warm and colored which is a welcome relief. I wouldn’t term it as a wholly neutral sound, there are some colorations in the warmish bass and forward vocal presence which gives it a very addictive musical presentation and pushes all the right buttons for relaxed and pleasurable listening... I wasn’t expecting much with the Meze 99 Classic woody, I actually believed it might be another more elaborate OEM. Boy, how wrong was I! I prefer this to the Momentums, the B&W P7’s and it gives the more established PM-3 a real run for its money. Meze has claimed some sort of technical redemption with these musical woodies and quite rightly they should be proud of the end product because they are a lot of fun... I hate getting carried away with hype but I will admit I do enjoy the 99 Classic more than my conservative values should really allow me."
